Galium odoratum (Sweet Woodruff)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

Not to be confused with our native Galium boreale (bedstraw), Galium odoratum (Asperula) is a wonderful ground cover with glossy fan-shaped green foliage. The dainty, star-shaped white flowers are sweetly scented. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Will take partial shade or full sun. Will dry and retain the sweet hay fragrance. A great partner to our native Mertensia virginica (Virginia Bluebells).

Grow at the edge of your woodlands, around your benches, anywhere to enjoy the nice soft perfume. Timing is right to hide bulb foliage. Don't let this one dry out. Foliage will sulk. Photo courtesy of Walter's Gardens.
