Alchemilla alpina (Lady's Mantle)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

I love the standard species for bouquets and large gardens but this little guy is perfect for smaller gardens especially for rockeries. The tiny chartreuse flowers float above ground-hugging uniquely shaped glossy leaves. I'm trying this one with another mat former, the new Ajuga reptans 'Dixie Chip' for a border.

Allium senescens 'Glaucum' (Ornamental Onion)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

The common name comes from the odor of onions when the leaves are bruised. This dainty guy will always have a place in my gardens. The little transparent "purse" that holds the blooms before they open is just oh so sweet. Mauve pink balls of flowers float above the grass-like foliage. A bulb that is easy to divide and clumps quickly. Likes sandy, well drained soils.

A member of Astilbe chinensis(Chinese Astilbe). A later blooming species useful for extending the bloom season into late summer. Foliage is deeply incised, coarsely textured, and often bronze-green in color. Flowers are borne on narrow, branched panicles. Though garden performance is far superior in moist soils, members of this species are moderately drought tolerant.

Creamy white plumes turn light pink as they age. Bushy foliage appears slightly marbled with green and silver when it's young, then turns solid green as it matures. Strong grower; blooms prolifically

Cerastium tomentosum 'Yo Yo' (Snow in Summer)

Thumbnail Photo

I'm planting this one just because I smile when I say the name. But for the rest of you, 'Yo Yo' is very easy to grow in almost any soils. The small woolly gray/silver leaves form a low carpet smothering out most weeds. This new variety is a bit more restrained and compact than the species. The flowers are the absolutely whitest flower ever, almost luminous. Combine with spring bulbs, or for opposite foliage type, Ajuga 'Dixie Chip'. Or just use this beauty alone in a border.

One of the absolute best plants for bordering paths or edging gardens. Heavy bloomer with bright white flowers and silver, fern-like foliage makes grand mounds.
