Ligularia 'Bottle Rocket' (Ragwort)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

Even more compact (shorter) than 'Little Rocket' which is the compact form of 'The Rocket'. Perfectly proportional plant. Mustard yellow spikes of flowers held on chocolate stems are located just above the dense clump of thick, serrated green leaves. You'll need space for this guy at about 3 feet wide, even though he is the littlest of the Rockets. Combine with aquilegia 'Goldfinch', lamium 'Herman's Pride', or any of the hosta.

If the regular Ligularia 'The Rocket' is too tall for you, here's the answer. Great foliage, tall slender spikes of hundreds of yellow daisy-like flowers are just like the big one.

Afternoon sun may cause leaves to wilt but they always perk back up in the morning. Combine with regular Ligularia 'The Rocket', ferns, Aconitum, Astilbe, Filipendula or Primula.

Lilium 'Fangio' (L.A. Hybrid Lily)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

Plum-colored petals and darker stamens grab your eye wherever they bloom in your gardens. So many other perennials are complimented by this great lily. Dicentra eximia 'Luxuriant' blooms all summer and although the foliage and flowers are opposite the lily, they make a great combination. (Photos courtesy of Dr. Annie Nevaldine.)

Grow on dry side to avoid bulb rot. Push a couple of sticks of chalk in beside the bulbs each spring for a "timed-release" feed. Removing the orange center pistils will add bloom time.

Monarda 'Grape Gumball' (Bee Balm)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

This brand new series of SUGAR BUZZ Monardas is perfectly suited to the middle of the flower border. In midsummer, 'Grape Gumball' forms a solid dome of vibrant magenta, 2-2.5 flowers on strong, well-branched stems. The dark green foliage forms an upright clump that will fill out containers nicely but wont run all over the garden. It displays above average resistance to powdery mildew.

Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden. The aromatic foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavor teas.

Papaver orientale 'Beauty of Livermere' (Oriental Poppy)

Grow your oriental poppies in really sharp drainage or they will die out over winter. The foliage will go dormant after blooming so combine with other perennials such as ornamental grasses, achillea, or filipendula to cover the dormancy. Even with all these concerns, oriental poppies really deserve a place in your gardens. The huge, dinner plate size of these rich, dark, fire engine red flowers with their course, hairy foliage just can't be beat.
