Iberis sempervirens 'Alexander White' (Candytuft)

Thumbnail Photo

A blanket of pure white! Large clusters of flowers carpet the narrow, evergreen leaves from mid to late spring. This variety is fairly tall for the species and has the added bonus of a tendency to rebloom in the fall.

An old-time favorite, candytuft is a charming plant for perennial gardens. Because of its drought tolerance, it makes a great filler for crevices in walls or between the stones of walkways. It is also effective as edging or groundcover.

Leucanthemella serotina (Shasta Alaska Daisy)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

'Alaska' is the classic Shasta Daisy and is the most common cultivar available. Huge 3 inch wide flowers are pure white with yellow centers and are borne on long 2-3 foot stems which are perfect for cutting. This is the hardiest strain of Shasta available. Shasta Daisies are all-time favorites for the perennial border. The cheery flowers begin to appear in early summer and continue on for several months if faithfully deadheaded. Shastas mix so effortlessly with other perennials that no garden should be without them!

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Banana Cream' (Shasta Daisy)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

If you haven't seen this new one, you don't subscribe to any magazines! It's everywhere and there is a reason. Introduced by Walter's Gardens after their field trials showed the vase life of 'Banana Cream' is well over 2 weeks. The early 4-inch-wide lemon yellow bloom continues to brighten to light butter yellow and finally to creamy white. The extra row of ray petals creates a fuller appearance than the usual Shasta daisies. We've tried to keep this one affordable so everyone can enjoy it.

Mustard yellow spikes of flowers held on chocolate stems are located just above the dense clump of thick, serrated green leaves. You'll need space for this guy at about 3 feet wide, even though he is the littlest of the Rockets. Combine with aquilegia 'Goldfinch', lamium 'Herman's Pride', or any of the hosta.

Lilium 'Fangio' (L.A. Hybrid Lily)

Thumbnail Photo

Plum-colored petals and darker stamens grab your eye wherever they bloom in your gardens. So many other perennials are complimented by this great lily. Dicentra eximia 'Luxuriant' blooms all summer and although the foliage and flowers are opposite the lily, they make a great combination. (Photos courtesy of Dr. Annie Nevaldine.)

Grow on dry side to avoid bulb rot. Push a couple of sticks of chalk in beside the bulbs each spring for a "timed-release" feed. Removing the orange center pistils will add bloom time.

Lilium 'Tiny Padhye' (Asiatic Lily)

One of the Lily Looks´┐Ż series developed in the Netherlands. Bred originally for containers, these are versatile garden plants as well. The dwarf habit makes them useful near the front of any sunny border where they put on a great midsummer show. Also equally at home in a rock garden. The best effect comes from massing in good-sized clumps of one variety. This selection has large, upfacing flowers with white petal tips stained deep red at the base. A very striking bicolor.
