Leucanthemum x superbum 'Crazy Daisy' (Shasta Daisy)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

It's labeled "crazy" because no two blooms are alike. The fringed and frilly, semi- to fully double Shasta Daisy offers 2 inches wide, solid white petals surround a small buttery yellow center. Although it's often listed as a zone 5, I've grown it successfully in my zone 3 garden for about 5 years. And again, although it's listed as spreading, mine has never made another plant but only matured from the original planting. I do agree, however, that is has prolific flowering tendencies.

Ligularia 'Bottle Rocket' (Ragwort)

Thumbnail Photo

Even more compact (shorter) than 'Little Rocket' which is the compact form of 'The Rocket'. Perfectly proportional plant. Mustard yellow spikes of flowers held on chocolate stems are located just above the dense clump of thick, serrated green leaves. You'll need space for this guy at about 3 feet wide, even though he is the littlest of the Rockets. Combine with aquilegia 'Goldfinch', lamium 'Herman's Pride', or any of the hosta.

A bit difficult to get established but well worth the effort. The glossy chocolate-purple foliage with bright purple undersides is phenomenal but the golden-orange daisy-like flowers on their black stems are also superlative.

Lilium 'Brindisi' (L.A. Hybrid Lily)

One of my absolute all-time favorites. I'd love to have a dress this color, or maybe a bedroom, or maybe about 100 plants in my gardens. Soft, glowing pink flowers look good enough to eat.

Grow on dry side to avoid bulb rot. Push a couple of sticks of chalk in beside the bulbs each spring for a "timed-release" feed. Removing the orange center pistils will add bloom time.

Combine with Filipendula 'Venustra, Astrantia 'Hadspen Blood', Geranium 'Sabani Blue', or tall ornamental grasses.

Orange is in and this one is a true orange and one of the best oranges. Butterflies find this one quickly. Exotic look makes for a good cut flower choice. Brunello multiplies very nicely, indicating excellent potential for naturalizing.

Plum-colored petals and darker stamens grab your eye wherever they bloom in your gardens. So many other perennials are complimented by this great lily. Dicentra eximia 'Luxuriant' blooms all summer and although the foliage and flowers are opposite the lily, they make a great combination. (Photos courtesy of Dr. Annie Nevaldine.)

Lilium 'Renoir' (Asiatic Lily)

Thumbnail Photo

Exotically beautiful, upward-facing soft pink flowers are very romantic for cut flowers and for perennial borders. Achillea 'Summerwine' is a perfect companion plant, not just because of the soft wine color, but also because the bloom and foliage are completely different than the lily for a nice show.

Nepeta racemosa ''Walkers Low'' (Catmint)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

This British variety was selected as the 2007 Perennial Plant of the Year. Plants are mounded and bushy in habit, with small grey-green fragrant leaves. Masses of bright-blue flowers appear on short spikes in early summer, continuing on and off through the fall if the old flowers are regularly removed. Despite the name, this is best in the middle of a border because of its mid-sized stature. Drought tolerant, once established. Flowers are attractive to butterflies.

Phlox subulata 'North Hills' (Creeping Phlox)

Something new in creeping phlox! This darling little selection produces bright white flowers with a prominent violet purple eye. They blanket the bright green mat of foliage in late spring.

Creeping phlox is a low-growing species which forms a carpet-like mat no taller than 6 inches. This popular little perennial is best utilized in rocky areas, on slopes, and in flower borders.

Polemonium caeruleum 'Brise d' Anjou' ()

Thumbnail Photo

Recently introduced to North American gardeners, this was a chance discovery at a nursery in France. A first-class foliage plant for using towards the front of the border, where its variegated green and creamy-white leaves look for all the world like some exotic fern. Heads of violet-blue flowers rise above on short stems in early summer. This seems to prefer a partly shaded situation with protection from hot afternoon sun, particularly where summers are warm and humid. Also excellent in mixed containers.

I must have at least 50 of these in my 16 display gardens. Obviously, one of my favorites. I'm not sure if it's the flower or the spider-silver seed pod I like most. One of the first to bloom in my gardens. Bell-shaped, single dark red flowers look marvelous combined with spring bulbs, bergenia, dicentra 'Ivory Heart'and dark foliage ajuga.
