Lilium 'Tiny Padhye' (Asiatic Lily)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

One of the Lily Looks series developed in the Netherlands. Bred originally for containers, these are versatile garden plants as well. The dwarf habit makes them useful near the front of any sunny border where they put on a great midsummer show. Also equally at home in a rock garden. The best effect comes from massing in good-sized clumps of one variety. This selection has large, upfacing flowers with white petal tips stained deep red at the base. A very striking bicolor.

Lychnis x arkwrightii 'Orange Gnome' (Maltese Cross)

A Fairbanks gardener tells me lychnis arkwrightii does fine in their gardens. This is a new variety I'm anxious to see if it does as well. This new variety offers larger flowers 1.5 inches across and more of them. The brilliant orange-scarlet color is much sought after as it totally lights up the garden but it doesn't stop there. The foliage is also totally awesome with a purplish-bronze flush. Combine with Anemone Sylvestris, Allium Glaucum, hosta.

Monarda 'Grape Gumball' (Bee Balm)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

This brand new series of SUGAR BUZZ Monardas is perfectly suited to the middle of the flower border. In midsummer, 'Grape Gumball' forms a solid dome of vibrant magenta, 2-2.5 flowers on strong, well-branched stems. The dark green foliage forms an upright clump that will fill out containers nicely but wont run all over the garden. It displays above average resistance to powdery mildew.

Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden. The aromatic foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavor teas.

This British variety was selected as the 2007 Perennial Plant of the Year. Plants are mounded and bushy in habit, with small grey-green fragrant leaves. Masses of bright-blue flowers appear on short spikes in early summer, continuing on and off through the fall if the old flowers are regularly removed. Despite the name, this is best in the middle of a border because of its mid-sized stature. Drought tolerant, once established. Flowers are attractive to butterflies.

Carmine-red blossoms with a silvery sheen are lavishly produced in early summer. This is a fragrant, double variety.

Peonies are classic garden plants that add a bit of nostalgia and charm to the garden. Their fragrant blooms and lush foliage have made them popular for years, and with the recent resurgence in breeding, they will continue to improve. Peonies are simple to grow and can be utilized in many ways, including mass plantings, specimens, or hedges. By choosing a mixture of early, midseason, and late blooming varieties, you can have blooms for up to 6 weeks.

An improvement over Pattys Plum, this selection is more compact in habit and has longer lasting flowers. Polemonium caeruleum 'Brise d' Anjou' ()

Recently introduced to North American gardeners, this was a chance discovery at a nursery in France. A first-class foliage plant for using towards the front of the border, where its variegated green and creamy-white leaves look for all the world like some exotic fern. Heads of violet-blue flowers rise above on short stems in early summer. This seems to prefer a partly shaded situation with protection from hot afternoon sun, particularly where summers are warm and humid. Also excellent in mixed containers.

Delicate, creamy-white, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers dangle from an arching stem. Very unusual form. The arching burgundy stems carry alternate, lance shaped, green leaves with white margins. As with hosta, this woodland plant will probably do better with some sun here in Alaska.
